The Walt Disney Internet Group will launch a massively multiplayer online role-playing game in conjunction with the theatrical release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" in 2006, sources say. The game will allow players to adopt an online persona and do battle with in-game characters as well as competing crews.

Davy Jones, I Presume?

4/22/2005

Verifying an earlier news item, actor Bill Nighy confirms that he will appear in the upcoming sequels to "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" in the role of Davy Jones himself.

"I am a very, very, very, very bad man and I am there to make people suffer in all new ways, in ways that you won't have seen before," Nighy said. "I have a boat and I have a crew, and they are really evil buggers."

George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic is once again in charge of visual effects, and fans of Nighy may have trouble recognizing him. "I'm so computer generated that you might have trouble spotting me. You'll know it's me, but you might have to check the credits afterwards."

Nighy didn't reveal any real spoilers, but he did comment "They're cracking stories, they're great stories. If you liked the first one, you'll love this."

Nighy's upcoming film "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" premiered in the UK on 20 April and opens in the US on 29 April.

Funding Nemo

4/20/2005

Franck Le Calvez, a French childrens' book author, has lost his legal suit claiming Disney copied his clownfish Pierrot for the film "Finding Nemo." The court went on to find Le Calvez guilty of fraud and ordered him to pay $79,600 in damages, interest and legal fees as well as the cost of reprinting the court's ruling in three publications of Disney's choosing. Disney, Pixar and French publisher Disney-Hachette Editions will split a $49,600 judgment for damages and interest, with the remaining $30,000 earmarked for legal fees.

Earlier this year the court had ruled that Pierrot and Nemo were similar, but not similar enough to cause confusion in the marketplace. Le Calvez then pursued a second suit which was rejected by the court today.

The book in question was published in late 2002, well after Disney's "Finding Nemo" had begun to be widely visible throughout France via the internet and movie previews, the court maintained. Le Calvez claimed that, while the book was not published until 2002, it had been registered several years earlier.

Following up on an earlier report (seventh item), the Hollywood Reporter today says that Disney, Sony and Warner Brothers studios have signed a deal with Thomson's Technicolor Digital Cinema unit to assist in facilitating theatres' transition to digital film presentation.

While neither the studios nor TDC would comment on the record, it is believed that the other major film studios will join Disney, Sony and Warner in the future. Fear of running afoul of antitrust regulations had reportedly kept the seven major studios from banding together, although a consortium called DCI had been formed by them in the past to establish standardized technical specifications for digital film technology.

Bob and Harvey Weinstein are moving forward with their new company, currently called the Weinstein Co. In a recently announced agreement, Disney will retain the rights to the Miramax name and film library, while the Weinsteins will keep the Dimension Films label. During the 12-year relationship between Disney and the Weinsteins, Miramax films grossed over four billion US dollars and won a total of 53 Academy Awards including 3 Best Picture Oscars.

Harvey Weinstein said the Weinstein Co. leaves the partnership "with the relationships of what we believe are some of the most significant and the most profitable filmmakers in the world."

One of those filmmakers, Robert Rodriguez ("Sin City") commented, "If they're moving somewhere, you gotta go with them, or what, you're going to start making regular movies? They've still got the same taste. And they've got more to prove now, so they may do even better material."
