DISNEYLAND'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONTINUES WITH PIRATE ADVENTURE

Milestone Celebration Continues with Spectacular Entertainment and Debut of New Adventures Before Final Bow

The once-in-a-lifetime event that is Disneyland's 50th anniversary celebration continues this summer with spectacular entertainment and the debut of new adventures before its final bow. The celebration is a unique opportunity for new and returning guests to be part of an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime milestone anniversary and the park's biggest event ever. It's also a fun-filled tribute to the rich legacy of innovation, creativity and storytelling that has made Disneyland a national treasure.

"Disneyland was built on a simple premise: Walt Disney wanted to create a place where family members of all ages could share experiences together," said Matt Ouimet, president of Disneyland Resort. "Our 50th anniversary taps into the emotional connection we enjoy with our guests. We look forward to welcoming them with new attractions and innovative entertainment."

Adding to the fun of the 50th anniversary celebration will be an all-new chapter in the legacy of one of Walt Disney's most beloved adventures -- Pirates of the Caribbean. The classic Disney Park adventure brought to the big screen in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, is adding new characters and features from the blockbuster entertainment franchise and debuting when the next adventure begins in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

The popular attraction at both the Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida closed in March to complete the updates in time for the opening of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on July 7. The attraction will re-open at Disneyland on June 26.

The attraction will feature the addition of two of Hollywood's most infamous buccaneers, Captain Jack Sparrow and his nemesis Barbossa. Joining the wildest crew that ever sacked the Spanish Main, Captain Jack and Barbossa add an exciting new twist to the attraction's original storyline as they race to be the first to claim a cache of plundered treasure.

Woven into some of the attraction's most memorable scenes, the rival swashbucklers will be seen interacting with some of the more familiar Audio-Animatronics buccaneers found inside the ride-thru adventure. Also making a guest appearance is the ghostly Davy Jones from the second movie in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. But new characters are only the beginning. New special effects will also be added to enhance the Pirates of the Caribbean theme park experience.

DISNEYLAND SALUTES 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF 'IT'S A SMALL WORLD' AND ONE OF POP CULTURE'S MOST ENDURING (AND UN-ENDING) SONG HITS

Thanks to Disneyland, The Sun Never Sets on the Song "It's A Small World (After All)"

ANAHEIM, Calif.

This Sunday May 28, 2006, marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of the classic attraction "it's a small world" at "The Happiest Place on Earth." One of the most popular Disney attractions of all time, the show is a fun-filled and whimsical salute to the children of the world that conveys its message of peace and harmony through the international language of music.

The water-borne journey originally debuted on April 22, 1964, at the New York World's Fair, but it was its move to an elaborate new home at Disneyland that firmly cemented its place in pop culture and created, literally, an unforgettable theme song (much to the chagrin of many).

Although it was a hit with visitors to the fair, "it's a small world" did not gain widespread fame as a must-see Disney experience until after Walt Disney himself presided over its official opening ceremonies at Disneyland on May 28, 1966. The attraction's new address in Fantasyland provided a platform where millions of guests from around the world would be annually introduced to its visual charms and catchy title tune (by the Academy Award-winning songwriting team of Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman).

The new Disneyland version of the attraction, with its 900-foot long gleaming white, blue and gold facade, a fanciful 30-foot high chiming glockenspiel clock tower and over 300 singing and dancing Audio-Animatronics performers, became an instant favorite with park guests from around the globe. Through initial merchandise tie-ins (toys, records, music boxes, etc.) and the sheer popularity of its new incarnation, the attraction's theme song became an international sensation (performed by everyone from top-name performers to local school and church choirs), so much so that today it is purported to be one of the most performed and recognized songs in the world.

"Disneyland was the springboard for making our little tune a phenomenal hit," said songwriter Richard M. Sherman whose current projects include successful stage adaptations of his musicals "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "Mary Poppins," soon to debut on Broadway. "The song was originally written as a slow ballad and a prayer for peace and in 1966 the world was in a bad state of affairs so I think the song sparked and resonated even more...highlighting that we're all together in this world and we're more alike than we are different."

Due to its popularity at Disneyland, "it's a small world" has been duplicated with similar success at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida (1971), Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan (1983) and Disneyland Paris Resort in France (1992), ensuring that during every minute of the day its happy anthem is playing somewhere on the planet. Since 1966 more than 100 million people have enjoyed the four different versions of the attraction around the world, resulting in numerous Internet articles citing its title tune as one of the greatest "earworms" (songs or melodies you just can't get out of your head) of all-time.

Inside the attraction the song and melody are repeatedly featured within a soundtrack loop. The loop is played, on average, 1200 times a day during a 16-hour operating day at each Disney Park. It is estimated that the song and melody are therefore played over 4,800 times around the world during any 24-hour period!

The song and attraction have even taken on a holiday motif through the years. On November 27, 1997, Disneyland unveiled "it's a small world holiday," a spectacular seasonal make-over of the attraction (exclusive to Disneyland) that celebrates the winter holidays around the world. Each year the attraction's famous facade is adorned with hundreds of thousands of holiday lights while the interior and its cast of international children receive a festive overlay. Even the familiar "it's a small world" soundtrack gets into the holiday spirit as the attraction's famed song becomes part of a medley featuring "Jingle Bells" and "Deck the Halls."

"Of the many great songs and scores created by the Sherman Brothers, for such classic films as 'Poppins,' 'The Jungle Book,' and 'The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' to name a few, none have the gravitas of international fame as 'it's a small world," stated Jeff Kurtti, co-author of the book "Walt's Time: From Before to Beyond" (a biography of the Sherman Brothers). "From its start as a song for UNICEF at the New York World's Fair to a hit tune synonymous with Disneyland and the Disney parks, the song has become both a beloved and parodied pop culture song staple."

A mainstay of childhood music education, the song has become both cherished and derided. Disney itself has even parodied the song. In the hit 1994 animated feature "The Lion King," the villain, Scar, requests to be serenaded with a bouncy tune to improve his bad mood. His lackey Zazu begins to sing "It's a Small World (After All)," prompting Scar to shout in apparent agony, "No, No! ANYTHING but that!" The song is also playfully poked fun at during the madcap "MuppetVision 3D" attraction at Disney Parks in California and Florida.

"The song's perpetual cheery disposition may be grating on some nerves but there's no denying it's a catchy tune," adds Sherman, with a wink (who confides as an aside that his home doorbell also plays the first few bars of the song). "If this were the only song my brother Bob and I ever wrote we would be most grateful songwriters -- to have your song play virtually every minute of the day around the world with a message of peace, childhood hope, understanding between peoples and joy -- I don't think it gets any better than that!"

Disneyland and Indy Motor Speedway Present "Minnie Indy" Race

5/18/2006

Press Release

Two American Traditions Race For Charity

Disneyland Resort in California and Indianapolis 500 Drivers Participate in the "Minnie Indy Charity Race"

Indianapolis, IN

Checkered flags will wave, crowds will cheer and engines will roar (both big and small) as two American traditions team up to celebrate special milestones. In honor of Disneyland's 50th anniversary and the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500, "The Happiest Place on Earth" and "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" will team up for the "Minnie Indy Charity Race" on Wed., May 24 at 1:30 p.m. (ET) on American Family Insurance 500 Festival Community Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Minnie Mouse herself will be on hand to wave in the likes of Danica Patrick, Dan Wheldon, Eddie Cheever, Jr., Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan, Buddy Rice and Jeff Simmons who are among the 31 IndyCar Series drivers who will participate in the whimsical race. They will be driving miniature cars taken directly from one of Disneyland's original opening day attractions - - the ever-popular Autopia. Since July 17, 1955, more than 203 million Disneyland guests have put petal to the metal behind the wheel of these beloved little vehicles.

Image © Disney.

Instead of racing along the futuristic highways of Disneyland's Tomorrowland, the Autopia cars and their speed-loving IndyCar Series drivers will traverse a comical obstacle race course (at top speeds of 10 mph!) that will take place on a specially designed "Minnie" roadway created on the famous Brickyard. The "Minnie Indy Charity Race" will be led-off by the original winning car of the 1911 Indy 500 in addition to the 2006 Chevrolet Z06 Indy 500 pace car. All drivers will line up in the actual race-day grid -- based on qualifying times -- that are slated for the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500 scheduled for May 28.

"It will be exciting to see the cars of Disneyland's Autopia racing across the famed Yard of Bricks with the greatest race drivers in the world driving them," said Joie Chitwood, president and COO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "The Minnie Indy Charity Race will be a good complement to the events leading up to the 90th Running of the Indianapolis 500."

Each driver will be accompanied by a young student, selected from a school participating in the 500 Festival and Indianapolis 500 Education Program, who will do his or her best to assist the drivers as they make their way through the course. The winning driver will win a $25,000 donation to his/her charity of choice and the remaining drivers will receive $1,000 to donate to their charities of choice. The winning child will win an all-expense paid trip to the Disneyland Resort in southern California that will include bringing his/her immediate family.

"The 500 Festival focuses on great family entertainment, so we are thrilled to be involved with Disneyland...the master of family fun," said Kirk Hendrix, President and CEO, 500 Festival.

In addition to the participating IndyCar Series drivers, renowned Indianapolis 500 legends including Michael Andretti and Al Unser, Jr., will join current IRL series drivers to compete for prize money on behalf of their favorite charities.

"The fun of Disneyland and the spectacle of the Indy 500 are two great American traditions," said Matt Ouimet, president of the Disneyland Resort. "As the 50th anniversary celebration enters its finale this summer we are proud that our Autopia cars will be on hand to commemorate 90 years of racing excellence at the Indy 500."

The 500 Festival was created in 1957 to organize civic events celebrating the Indianapolis 500. It is a not-for-profit organization supported by corporate sponsorships, memberships and ticket sales. More than 7,000 volunteers help produce 500 Festival events. With annual participation of more than 425,000 people from around Indiana and the world, it has grown to be one of the largest festivals in the nation.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been the worldwide leader in motorsports entertainment since it opened in 1909. The facility has played host to the Indianapolis 500, the world's largest single-day annual sporting event, since 1911 and also is the site of the United States Grand Prix Formula One race and the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series.

Celebrating with the Indianapolis 500 is just one of the highlights of 2006 as the global 50th anniversary celebration of Disneyland continues around the world. Throughout the year each Disney resort will showcase more new innovative attractions and spectacular entertainment designed to appeal to guests of all ages with immersive experiences that only Disney can provide.

More information about the 50th anniversary celebration, plus vacations at the Disneyland Resort are available at Disneyland.com, by calling (877) 700-DISNEY, or by visiting local travel agents.

Prince Caspian Release Date Changed; ABC Announces New Schedule

Prince Caspian Release Date Changed

Prince Caspian, the second film in the "Chronicles of Narnia" series, has been moved from a December 14, 2007 release to summer of 2008 according to reports. The move was announced Tuesday by Dennis Rice, Walt Disney Studios' senior vice president of publicity.

The move came after Sony Pictures and Walden Media announced a December release date for The Water Horse, a fantasy tale that studio officials feared would be seen as too similar to the second "Narnia" film. Walden Media is producing Prince Caspian in cooperation with Disney, as well as producing The Water Horse for Sony.

Andrew Adamson, director of the first Narnia film, is returning to direct Prince Caspian.

Insider Features Depp Film; Richards Out For Third Pirates of the Caribbean?, Disney Shares Up

5/10/2006

The current issue of Disney Insider features a look at Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest including commentary by co-writer and friend of Keep To The Code Terry Rossio.

An excerpt:

It's been a long three years, but on July 7 Captain Jack Sparrow and crew will be back, with dastardly new villains, a heart-thumping new quest, and a full shipload of familiar faces. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" reunites Jack (Johnny Depp), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) in a quest that will bring them face-to-face with a terrifying new menace in the person of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) -- and reunite Will with his long-lost father, Bootstrap Bill (Stellan Skarsgard).

The latest in the on-again off-again saga of Keith Richards as Johnny Depp's father in the third Pirates of the Caribbean film has the Rolling Stones guitarist in the "off-again" column.

Richards has reportedly undergone surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain resulting from a recent fall. It is unclear what effect his recovery may have on his ability to play the father of Jack Sparrow, and a studio spokesman reportedly commented "the casting of the film is yet to be finalized."

Tokyo Disneyland Resort Releases 2005-06 Financials

5/09/2006

Oriental Land Company, the parent organization of Tokyo Disneyland Resort, has released its financial statement for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2006. The report also includes strategic forward-looking statements and goals for the company.

The report can be viewed at this link (requires Acrobat Reader)

About Tokyo Disneyland Resort

Tokyo Disney Resort
is a totally integrated, entertainment destination that expands the concept of a theme park to a theme resort. Located on some 200 hectares of land, Tokyo Disney Resort is Japan's first "theme resort" and encompasses a number of distinct facilities, each promising a unique brand of themed entertainment. Guests visiting the Resort will enjoy a thrilling environment filled with high quality amenities, hospitality and entertainment.

Before Tokyo Disney Resort, there was Tokyo Disneyland Park, the first Disney Park to be built outside the United States. Opening in April 1983, Tokyo Disneyland brought the dreams and magic of Disney family entertainment to Japan.

Just outside JR Maihama Station is Ikspiari, which opened in July 7, 2000. Featuring nine unique themed zones of shopping, dining and entertainment, including some 130 shops and restaurants, Ikspiari is also the location of Cinema Ikspiari, a state-of-the-art cinema complex with 16-screens, and Camp Nepos, a children's play and care center specially designed to stimulate creativity.

Disney Ambassador Hotel, the first Disney branded hotel in Japan, also opened in July 7, 2000. This elegantly designed resort hotel features 1930s American art deco design, and special Disney themed amenities. Here guests will enjoy Disney Character Dining, where Disney characters greet them while they dine. And couples can make their dreams come true with Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings in the hotel's Rose Chapel.

Tokyo DisneySea Park and the in-park Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta opened in September 4, 2001. Tokyo DisneySea is inspired by the myths and legends of the sea. Incorporating its seaside location, Tokyo DisneySea is comprised of seven themed ports of call. The Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta captures the ambience of old-world Italy. "Mira costa" is Italian for "view of the coast," and this luxury hotel offers accommodations with impressive views of the Park's major waterway and Tokyo Bay.

The Disney Resort Line monorail system began operations in July 27, 2001. The system connects the various Resort facilities, providing guests with a convenient means of transportation around the Resort.

Oriental Land Co., Ltd. was established in 1960 to develop large-scale leisure facilities to contribute to the nation's culture and welfare. That original mission was accomplished with the opening of Tokyo Disneyland Park. The success of that Park prompted the desire to present bigger dreams and more excitement to as many guests as possible. With the evolution from theme park to the Tokyo Disney Resort, Oriental Land will be able to do all that and more.

The Golden (Arches) Dream Is Over

5/08/2006

Disney, McDonald's To Part Promotional Company

Reports of childhood obesity, health concerns called "misrepresentation"

As reported at this link (see May 13, 2005 update), Disney and McDonald's will dissolve their marketing agreement for McDonald's Happy Meal film promotions this summer. Reports today hinted that it may not be for reasons cited in our report last year.

Earlier reports had suggested that McDonald's would seek to end the exclusive agreement in order to pursue other film properties with other studios, but the most recent reports claim the decision was made due to Disney's "concerns over childhood obesity and poor eating habits."

McDonald's spokesman Jack Daly today said the most recent reports are "based on Hollywood hearsay from unnamed sources, and the entire premise is a misrepresentation of the truth." Daly went on to call the Disney/McDonald's decision "mutual." Last summer McDonald's disclosed that it would not renew the pact when it expires.

"Cars" and "Dead Man's Chest" are expected to be the final McDonald's/Disney Happy Meal film/toy tie-in promotions under the current arrangement. McDonald's restaurants and snack carts in Disney's theme parks and elsewhere on Disney properties are not expected to be affected by the announcement.

Press Release

Hollywood's legendary El Capitan Theatre gets its 80th anniversary off to a flying start with a special two-week engagement of Disney's Oscar®-winning animated classic, "Dumbo," from May 25th - June 7th, it was announced today by Lylle Breier, senior vice president of worldwide special events for Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. "Dumbo" is celebrating its 65th birthday this year, and a new deluxe "Big Top Edition" DVD release of the film is scheduled for June 6th. For this engagement, a pristine new transfer of the film was made, and it will be digitally projected for an enhanced theatrical experience. Adding to the fun of this special anniversary event will be a live in-theatre appearance by Winnie the Pooh (who is also celebrating his 80th birthday this year), and a showing of the 1966 Pooh animated featurette, "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree." The engagement will kick-off with a special filmmakers' panel on Thursday, May 25th at 7:00 pm that will include veteran Disney animator Eric Goldberg, Academy Award®-winning songwriter Richard Sherman (who wrote many songs for the "Pooh" films including the featurette, "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree")and film music historian Miles Kreuger (president of the Institute of the American Musical), among others. Tickets for the "Dumbo"/"Winnie the Pooh" engagement can be purchased at the box office, online at this link, or by calling 1-800-DISNEY6.

To further commemorate this landmark anniversary, Disney's Soda Fountain and Studio Store (located next door to the theatre) will be offering a special El Capitan 80th Anniversary commemorative pin. They will also be serving up a special "El Capitan Sundae," a delicious waffle bowl dipped in homemade chocolate, filled with two delicious scoops of Dewar's vanilla fudge ice cream, and drizzled with caramel, topped with whipped cream and a chocolate covered strawberry, and dusted with a shimmering gold powder.

Commenting on the announcement, Breier said, "Our audience is always telling us how much they love coming to the El Capitan Theatre to see their favorite Disney classics presented in state-of-the-art conditions and we're always happy when we can bring them what they want. 'Dumbo' is one of the most delightfully entertaining films in our library, and our 80th anniversary seemed like a great time to show it along with some special 'Pooh' anniversary activities. In addition to the much anticipated summer release of Disney/Pixar's new computer-animated feature, 'CARS,' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest,' we're looking forward to celebrating the El Capitan Theatre's special anniversary with a variety of exciting events throughout the year."

Pixar Shareholders OK Disney Deal

5/05/2006

San Francisco, May 5

Shareholders of Pixar Animation Studios voted today to approve the acquisition of the company by The Walt Disney Company in an all-stock deal valued at approximately 7.4 billion dollars. Investor-shareholders in Pixar will receive 2.3 shares of Disney stock for each share of Pixar they hold; Pixar chief executive Steven Jobs is the single largest shareholder, with 40% of Pixar's outstanding shares.

The vote was cast in a shareholder meeting in San Francisco overseen by Pixar Chief Financial Officer Simon Bax.

The agreement will make Jobs Disney's single largest shareholder, with an estimated 7% stake in Disney. Jobs will also be named to Disney's board of directors under the agreement.

"Cars," the last film under the original Disney/Pixar distribution agreement, is due to be released in theaters on June 9. It is expected to join previous Disney/Pixar blockbusters like "Finding Nemo" and "Toy Story" as a top box office draw.

The relationship between Disney and Pixar had been strained prior to Bob Iger taking on the role vacated by previous Disney chairman Michael Eisner, who stepped down last year after a 20-year career at Disney's helm. After taking over, Iger made mending the Disney/Pixar relationship a priority, recognizing the quality and value of the Pixar name and product and its inherent value to the Disney brand.

Press Release

DISNEY THEME PARKS WELCOME 2-BILLIONTH GUEST

12-Year Old from Colorado Springs, Colorado, Receives Lifetime Pass to Disney Parks Worldwide

ANAHEIM, Calif. (May 2, 2006)

At 9:02am today Disneyland lived up to its reputation as "The Happiest Place on Earth" as it welcomed 12-year old Emmalee Mason of Colorado Springs, Colorado, as she became the honorary two-billionth guest to visit a Disney Park (nearly the combined populations of China and India).

Amidst a blast of colorful streamers, musical fanfare and a parade of congratulatory Disney characters, Emmalee was whisked away to Disneyland's iconic Floral Mickey for a special ceremony. Surrounded by her family and familiar Disney pals, Emmalee seemed to be in a simultaneous state of shock and delight, repeating astonished sets of "Wow!" "Wow!" "Wow!"

Emmalee Mason is Disney's honorary two billionth Park guest. Photo © Disney.

In commenting on the day's ceremony, Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, stated: "This is truly a highlight of our continuing global 50th anniversary celebration. The world over families use words like 'magical,' 'dreams,' 'wonder,' and 'imagination' to describe our five destination resorts around the world and now thanks to Emmalee, our honorary two-billionth guest, we can add the word "Wow!"

Andrae Rivas, the 2006 Disneyland Resort Ambassador, presented Emmalee with a giant golden key and a lifetime pass to all 11 Disney Parks around the world at such distinct locales as Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan, Disneyland Paris Resort in France and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort in China (which opened in September 2005), in addition to Disneyland Resort in southern California. As an added surprise, the entire family of 10 (Emmalee, her mom and dad, Mike and Michele, five sisters, one brother, plus a baby on the way) also received lifetime passes to Disney Parks worldwide.

Rivas also gave Emmalee a one-of-a-kind proclamation designating her as the honorary two-billionth guest to visit the Disney Parks over the past five decades. During her special day Emmalee received a private photo session with her family and Mickey Mouse, an exclusive tour of Disneyland Park and Disney's California Adventure Park, a special ride on the Matterhorn Bobsleds with Mickey, and was feted as Grand Marshal of Disneyland's 50th anniversary parade.

"WOW! I'm in shock...I'm so happy!" exclaimed Emmalee. "I am just so surprised...I didn't think that I would be the 2 billionth guest...this kind of stuff never happens to me!"

"Two-billion guests means two-billion lifetime memories that have been made and shared with friends and families at Disney Parks around the world," said Rasulo. "A visit to a Disney theme park, whether in California, Florida, Japan, France or China, remains a vibrant and universally embraced experience passed from generation to generation."

Citing the two-billionth Disney Park guest is just one of the highlights of 2006 as the global 50th anniversary celebration of Disney Parks around the world continues. Throughout the year each Disney resort will unveil more new innovative attractions and spectacular entertainment designed to appeal to guests of all ages with immersive experiences that only Disney can provide.

More information about the 50th anniversary celebration, plus vacations at the Disneyland Resort are available at www.disneyland.com, by calling (877) 700-DISNEY, or by visiting local travel agents.

Beverly Hills, CA

Beginning May 10, a screening series of four films, all notable for their technological innovations, will be presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Science and Technology Council. All of the films to be presented in "Movie Magic" were discussed in previous events staged by the Council.

Following is the series schedule:

Known for its spectacular monsoon and earthquake sequences, "The Rains Came" won the first Academy Award given in the Special Effects category; E. H. May 24 at 7:30 p.m., Linwood Dunn Theater: "Applause" (1929). This early sound film, starring Helen Morgan, marked the directorial debut of Russian-born Rouben Mamoulian. In the new era of the "talkie," it was the first film ever to be made in a two-channel monophonic mix and is credited as a giant step forward in motion picture sound technique. A restored print of the "The Gigolo Racket," a Vitaphone short also starring Morgan, will be screened as well. Scott MacQueen, Director, ProTek Restoration Management, will introduce the films.
