Pirates Online Game To Launch; Disneyland Food & Wine Event

4/12/2006

Press Release

DISNEY ONLINE DEVELOPING 'PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN' MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER INTERNET GAME

Follow-up to Disney's Toontown Online Will Feature Interactive Adventures Inspired by the Popular Pirates Theme Park Attraction and Franchise

North Hollywood, Calif.

Disney Online, part of the Walt Disney Internet Group, is developing a new massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the popular theme park attraction and franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean." The game is slated to debut in summer 2006, coinciding with the theatrical premiere of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

(ed note: The game's release has been moved to 2007, but it will be available for preview at the Electronic Entertainment Expo running May 10-12, 2006)

Image © Disney

"We've learned through our experience with Toontown that the market for massively multiplayer online role-playing games can indeed reach beyond traditional gamers," stated Ken Goldstein, EVP and managing director, Disney Online. "Pirates of the Caribbean is the perfect franchise for our second commercial effort in this arena. Fans of the movies and theme park attraction will be able to live their own unfolding pirate adventure through the game, including searching for lost treasures and battling numerous enemies on land and at sea."

Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, added, "This is a great way for game enthusiasts to experience the fun and excitement of playing the role of a pirate while competing against a wide variety of opponents in a great adventure. This game captures the same swashbuckling sense of humor, spirit and action that moviegoers loved in the first 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film, and which will continue with the next installment of the highly anticipated sequel in summer 2006. Disney Online has created a really entertaining and challenging game that will appeal to the adventurer in all of us."

Image © Disney

The game is being designed by the Walt Disney Internet Group's acclaimed VR Studio as a world of high seas action and adventure where players will personalize their own pirate character and organize with other players to form a pirate crew. Players will then embark on swashbuckling missions to battle both each other and the evil, undead pirates of the high seas in an effort to become the Caribbean's most legendary pirate. Access to the game will be available directly online and players will pay a subscription fee for the service. An information site for the game has been launched at www.pirateslegend.com offering a registration service to sign-up to receive future game updates and launch information.

Buena Vista Games (BVG), the videogame arm of The Walt Disney Company, will release additional titles based on "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" for the PSP portable entertainment system and Nintendo DS in conjunction with the movie launch.

DISNEY-ABC TELEVISION GROUP TAKES ABC PRIMETIME ONLINE, OFFERING HIT SHOWS ON ABC.COM DURING MAY AND JUNE

Full-Length Episodes of "Lost," "Desperate Housewives," "Alias" and "Commander In Chief" Stream Free to Consumers During Two-Month Online Trial

Participating Advertisers Include AT&T, Cingular, Ford, Procter & Gamble, Toyota, Unilever's Suave, Universal Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures

Dedicated to expanding its network and channel brands across multiple platforms and connecting viewers with their favorite shows anytime and anywhere, Disney-ABC Television Group announced today that it will offer ad-supported, full-length episodes of four ABC primetime series online at www.abc.go.com as part of a two-month-long experiment. Current episodes of "Lost," "Desperate Housewives," and "Commander In Chief," as well as the entire present season of "Alias," will be available for streaming during May and June, marking the first time a broadcast network has made multiple series available for viewing online, free of charge to consumers.

"The evolution of ABC.com is just one piece of our comprehensive, digital media multiplatform business initiative," said Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney-ABC Television Group. "This announcement highlights the momentum we've achieved both in launching new broadband services and working with strategic partners in the digital media space, to ensure that our high-quality, informative and entertaining content is available to consumers whenever and wherever they choose."

ABC is also exploring ways to work with its local broadcast affiliates on these online offerings as they continue to evolve. "Our ultimate goal is to find an effective online model, one in which our affiliates can take part," stated Alex Wallau, president, Operations and Administration, ABC Television Network. "To that end, we'll be sharing information from this two-month test in our discussions going forward, and working on ways for them to participate in this new method of delivering ABC programming."

"Our mission with this trial is to gather key learning about the technology and the consumers who utilize it in order for ABC.com to become the leading broadband digital entertainment experience, packed with innovative, immersive content for our viewers," said Albert Cheng, executive vice president, Digital Media, Disney-ABC Television Group. "In the months ahead, ABC.com will not only deliver a high quality, on-demand viewing experience to users, but will also gain valuable knowledge and research to help us better understand and serve our consumers in the rapidly evolving digital world."

As part of the trial, ABC has offered ten advertisers the opportunity to test possible in-stream broadband advertising models as well as the ability to take advantage of sponsorships. The unique interactive video ads will take many different forms and will be seen within each episode. Participating advertisers include AT&T, Cingular, Ford, Procter & Gamble, Toyota, Unilever's Suave, Universal Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures, among others.

"We have said all along that we are dedicated to finding ways to bring our advertiser partners along with us as we embrace new ways of doing business in the world of digital media," said Mike Shaw, president, Sales and Marketing, ABC Television Network. "This unique project has allowed us to offer our advertisers the ability to deliver increased effectiveness in their messaging through targeted and engaging interactive ads that offer compelling consumer experiences."

Combining an all-new sleek, modern design with user-friendly functionality, ABC.com will offer episodes the day after they premiere on the linear channel. Consumers will be able to pause and move back and forth between "chapters" within each episode, but will not have the ability to fast-forward through advertisements. Episodes will be streamed in 16x9 formatting which offers a cinema-like feel to the viewing experience.

Encoded and streamed in Flash 8, which offers the best video quality and allows users on both Mac and PC platforms to watch the video episode, will be offered in two different sizes. The standard viewing size is 500x282 pixels (streamed at 400kbs), and the larger viewing size is 700x394 pixels (streamed 700 kbps).

Pirates Of The Caribbean Concept Art Released

4/07/2006

A PIRATES LIFE FOR ME

Pirates of the Caribbean, the classic Disney theme park adventure brought to the big screen in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," is adding new characters and features from the blockbuster entertainment franchise. Both the Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida closed the attraction in March to complete the updates in time for the opening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" on July 7. It will re-open at Disneyland on June 26 and in Florida's Magic Kingdom on July 7. The attraction will feature the addition of two of Hollywood's most infamous buccaneers, Captain Jack Sparrow and his nemesis Barbossa (pictured here aboard the Wicked Wench pirate ship). Joining the wildest crew that ever sacked the Spanish Main, the pair add an exciting new twist to the attraction's original storyline as they race to be the first to claim a cache of plundered treasure.

Disney Donates $1.5 Million To Boys and Girls Clubs In Gulf Coast

4/05/2006

Press Release

DISNEY CONTINUES TO SUPPORT REBUILDING IN THE GULF COAST REGION WITH $1.5 MILLION DONATION TO BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA

Disney's Financial Support of Gulf Coast Relief & Rebuilding Efforts Totals $3 Million; Senior Executive Vice President & CFO Tom Staggs Presented Donation to Boys & Girls Clubs of America President Roxanne Spillett on ABC News' 'Good Morning America;' Pass Christian Club Founded by GMA Co-Anchor Robin Roberts' Parents to Benefit from Donation

BILOXI, Miss. (April 05, 2006)

As part of an ongoing commitment to the rebuilding efforts in areas of the Gulf Coast hit hard by hurricanes last year, The Walt Disney Company Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Tom Staggs presented on behalf of Disney Worldwide Outreach a donation of $1.5 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America President Roxanne Spillett today on ABC News' "Good Morning America." The funds donated by Disney will go towards rebuilding 16 Clubs in the Gulf Coast that were severely damaged.

Disney is a Centennial Sponsor of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a nationwide network of approximately 3,700 Clubs that help to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens by providing safe places to learn and grow.

To help celebrate National Boys & Girls Club Week and the 100th Anniversary of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Staggs was joined by Mickey Mouse in presenting the donation and a celebratory birthday cake to Spillett and a group of local Boys & Girls Club members during a segment with "Good Morning America" Co-Anchor Robin Roberts in Biloxi, Miss.

"The tragic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina continues to be an extraordinary challenge long after the daily front page headlines have subsided," said Staggs. "On behalf of 133,000 cast members worldwide, Disney is proud to lend a hand with today's donation to the Boys & Girls Club of America and recognizes the important community contributions the Clubs make when their doors are open."

"This generous gift from Disney to rebuild Boys & Girls Clubs in the Gulf Coast destroyed by the hurricanes personifies the true spirit of this great company," said Spillett. "For so many of these youngsters, the Boys & Girls Club is a safe haven and rebuilding the Clubs is integral to giving them a sense of hope and opportunity for the future."

Of the $1.5 million, $500,000 will go to rebuilding the Pass Christian, Miss., Club that Roberts' parents, Lucimarian and Larry Roberts, helped to found in 1999. Pass Christian, a town of approximately 6,500 residents, is located 13 miles west of Gulfport, Miss. "Good Morning America" has been documenting the recovery effort in Pass Christian, 80 percent of which was destroyed in the storm.

"In support of the re-launch of ABC's A Better Community public affairs campaign encouraging volunteerism in local communities, $500,000 will go toward rebuilding the Pass Christian Boys & Girls Club. There is no better example of how to make a difference in the lives of others than the example set by 'Good Morning America' and Robin Roberts and the work that they have done alongside volunteers to rebuild Pass Christian," said Staggs.

Said Roberts: "It's a privilege to work for a company that is so community oriented. This generous donation will make a difference in the lives of many on my beloved Mississippi Gulf Coast. We join the tireless efforts of many in bringing joy and happiness back to the coast."

While rebuilding is the focus of Boys & Girls Clubs in the Gulf Coast, the process is still in its infancy due to the overwhelming need for financial support.

The Disney donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs brings the company's support of the organization to $4.5 million over the past year, and its financial support of the rebuilding efforts in the Gulf to $3 million. However, Disney businesses have raised millions more dollars for relief efforts through telethons, fundraisers and other initiatives.
