A Change in the Wind Brings "Mary Poppins" To "Great To Be Nominated"

Beverly Hills, CA

The 1964 Best Picture nominee "Mary Poppins" will be screened as the next feature in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Great To Be Nominated" series. The Walt Disney classic will be shown on Monday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The supercalifragilisticexpialidocious tale of a London banker and his family and their magical adventures with their new nanny, Mary Poppins, received 13 Academy Award® nominations and received five Oscars®, including a Best Actress win for Julie Andrews in the title role. "Mary Poppins" also earned Oscars for Film Editing (Cotton Warburton), Music Score -- substantially original (Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman), Song -- "Chim Chim Cher-ee" (music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman) and Special Visual Effects (Peter Ellenshaw, Eustace Lycett and Hamilton Luske).

Other nominations for the film include Best Picture (Walt Disney and Bill Walsh, producers), Color Art Direction (Art Direction: Carroll Clark, William H. Tuntke; Set Decoration: Emile Kuri, Hal Gausman), Color Cinematography (Edward Colman), Color Costume Design (Tony Walton), Directing (Robert Stevenson), Scoring of Music -- adaptation or treatment (Irwin Kostal), Sound (Walt Disney Studio Sound Department, Robert O. Cook, sound director) and Writing -- Screenplay based on material from another medium (Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi).

Oscar®-winning composer Richard M. Sherman will participate in a panel discussion prior to the screening.

Passes for "Great To Be Nominated" are still available at a cost of $30 for film buffs wishing to see the rest of the series. A $5 discount is available for those who wish to renew their passes from Parts One and/or Two of the series. Inclusive of "Mary Poppins" there are 14 screening dates remaining in Part Three.

Tickets for each individual screening may be purchased at a cost of $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, depending on availability, on the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time for all features is 7:30 p.m., and pre-show elements will begin at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
