Depp Honored; Knightley: Stunt Woman; Coaster Accident Update

10/14/2005

According to wire reports, Johnny Depp is to be this year's tributee at the American Film Institute's AFI Fest 2005. The annual event honors "someone who is a highly accomplished artist about whom we crave to know more," according to AFI Fest director Christian Gaines. He continued, "He has made interesting, risky choices in his career and has evolved into one of the most absorbing actors of our time."

The event will be held on November 11 at Hollywood's ArcLight Cinemas. Johnny will appear in an on stage discussion with film critic Richard Shickel, and the event will include the world premiere of "The Libertine" as well as a Depp retrospective and screenings of four of his other films, including "Edward Scissorhands" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?"

In a conversation with MTV News, Keira Knightley talked about some of her work on one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels currently in production. "I had my first day back [recently], because we had a little bit of a break over the summer. My first day back was being dragged across the deck by an invisible giant squid, invisible because it's being put in by CGI afterwards, so I just spent the entire time pretending that it was tentacles everywhere, and the director was running around going, 'I'm a tentacle, I'm a tentacle.' It takes a little bit of an imagination; I have no idea what it's going to look like, but hopefully it'll be cool."

Speaking about the technical aspect of the shoot, Keira said she "had a harness on, and a line running down my leg and coming out the bottom of my boot, and it was on a machine. They cranked the machine and it would just whip me over the floor, it was wicked."

(ed note: This is our third confirmation of the squid/kraken item; one from Orlando, one from Keira and one from an unnamed studio source. Interestingly, Orlando called it "a squid," Keira called it a "giant squid" and the studio called it a kraken. We tend to lean toward the kraken as the beast in question, given all the other fantastic elements in the films.)

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health has determined that the accident on the California Screamin' roller coaster at Disney's California Adventure park occurred due to air leaks in the ride's braking system.

The accident took place on July 29, when one of the coaster's trains failed to brake in its brake zone and rear-ended the train ahead of it. Seventeen people were taken to the hospital, with the majority of them treated for neck and back injuries.

Greg Hale, Chief Safety Officer for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said crews have "taken the necessary corrective actions," that were called for in the Cal-OSHA report. The ride is expected to reopen this week
